On June 14, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz announced that they would support the European Union’s decision to ban the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles after 2035. At a meeting in Strasbourg, France, on June 8, a European Commission proposal was voted to stop the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles in the EU from 2035, including hybrid vehicles.
Volkswagen has issued a series of statements on the legislation, calling it “ambitious but achievable”, noting that the regulation is “the only reasonable way to replace the internal combustion engine as soon as possible, ecologically, technically and economically”, and even praised the EU for assisting “for the Future Planning Security”.
Mercedes-Benz has also praised the legislation, and in a statement to the German news agency Eckart von Klaeden, Mercedes-Benz’s head of external relations, noted that Mercedes-Benz has prepared The good thing is to sell 100% electric cars by 2030.
In addition to Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Stellantis, Jaguar, Land Rover and other car companies also support the regulation. But BMW has yet to commit to the regulation, and a BMW official said it was too early to set an end date for the ban on gasoline-powered cars. It is important to note that before the new law can be finalized and ratified, it must be signed by all 27 EU countries, which can be a very difficult task in the current state of large economies such as Germany, France and Italy.
